Sleep & Natural Remedies

One easy, inexpensive way to calm your body quickly & safely is through the use of essential oils.  You can do this before you go to sleep in order to ensure you have a good night's rest.

Essential oils are the oils extracted from a  flower, fruit, leaf or bark from hundreds of plants all over the world.

The oils are highly potent & have a strong scent.  They also have medicinal properties.

Some essential oils, specifically, essential oils made from flowers, are particularly good in calming that part of our nervous system that requires deep, uninterrupted, restful sleep.

Lavender is the most common & well known essential oil but it is only one of hundreds of oils that one can be used to heal oneself of poor health.

2 other floral essential oils that I recommend for the calming of one's nervous system are rose & jasmine

You can use them in multiple ways.  The easiest is to take a cotton swab and dab a 2-3 drops on the swab.  Inhale the scent slowly while taking several deep, slow breaths.

You can also purchase a diffuser that plugs into your wall and emits the scent throughout the room with only 2-3 drops of the oil put into the diffuser.

You can also have a foot bath.  See my recent blog post on foot baths.  Add 4-6 drops of any of these oils to the foot bath.  To make sure the oil mixes well with the bath, mix them with a tablespoon of cream or milk & swoosh into the bath.

Or you can have the foot bath, rinse off with cool water and then apply 2-3 drops of the essential oil on the bottoms of your feet.

You can also create a warm or cool compress with a cotton cloth.  Soak it in water, heat or cool it and mix in the oils.  Place it onto a tired part of your body, your lower back or neck.  Relax and allow the compress to soak into you until you feel tired & sleepy.

Essential oils are inexpensive.  For a 5ml or 10ml bottle you will pay between $20 to $50 and will have the benefit of this bottle for multiple applications as each bottle has about 200 drops.

You can purchase essential oils typically at natural health food stores or pharmacies

Do We Need Sleep?

Everyone knows that we need sleep to stay healthy, right?

Right!  While it varies how much sleep one needs to rejuvenate & refresh their body & mind, the 'rule of thumb' is anywhere between 6 to 9 hours everyday on average.

And why do we 'need' sleep ...  we need it in order to fully relax that part of your nervous system that requires rest.

We have 2 parts to our nervous system.  One demands action, activity, movement in order to stay balanced & healthy.

The other part of our nervous system demands rest & no movement.

Without sleep or better put, 'restful sleep', our body's never shut down completely.

We need to fully rest for the body to repair itself & rejuvenate itself.  It's the body's 'shut down' period.

Without it, we don't repair what went out of balance, what was overworked during the day.

'Restful' sleep is deep sleep that is not interfered with.

Over a period of days, weeks, especially months & years, deprivation of continuous restful sleep is the catalyst for many illnesses.

If you're sleep deprived, I'll be talking about home made, inexpensive ways & remedies to create in you ways to have all the restful sleep you need.

Keep checking this blog.

Cycling

I like to cycle at a moderate, sometimes, brisk
pace along country roads or undiscovered paths in nature.

I cycle alone or with friends.

I find it's a great way to detoxify & increase my circulation.  I always find I feel healthier, more energized, happier & more fulfilled when I'm able to cycle on a daily or frequent basis.

The added oxygen from the fresh air is another reason I find this such a worthwhile way to spend my time.

When with friends, it's also a great way to socialize and create great memories.

If you don't cycle, try it.  It's addictive.

Detox Foot Baths & Skin Brushing

If you are feeling unwell, fatigued, headachy or unfocused, try these home remedies.

If you’re working outside the home, as many of us do, try these remedies but be mindful that these formulas are potent.  Reduce the frequency & the amount of ingredients until you've found what works best for you.

Give yourself a series of detox foot baths & brush your body twice a day with a natural loofah brush.  This method is called skin brushing.

The aim of these remedies is to stimulate your body’s lymphatic system to push toxins through & out of your body.

When doing these foot baths & skin brushing, be mindful that when toxins are circulated in your bodies, before their release of your body, you may feel even worse than before you started.  To avoid feeling poorly, DO NOT be overly aggressive with, particularly, the foot baths.

"The rule of thumb" is that the sicker you are, the more toxins are in your body and awaiting release.  Therefore, be gentle.  Try a lighter version of the foot baths to start and increase the ingredients as the days & weeks continue.

For the foot bath, these are ingredients you can use, although you won’t need each of them in each bath:  hot water, Epsom salts, sea salts, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda.  You can also use bentonite clay, white wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar and raw ginger.

Here’s how to start:

Skin Brushing

Before you shower, skin brush your entire body.  Do twice a day, morning & before bed.

Start at your feet and move upwards toward your heart.

Include your back, arms, legs.  Do not skin brush your face.

You should feel tingly as you’ve stimulated your lymphatic system and have increased your body’s circulation.  The lymphatic system’s role is to remove unwanted substances, toxins from the body.

When we age, our muscle tone typically decreases.  It is the muscles that push the lymph (the fluid within the lymphatic system) through the body.

As we age our ability to move lymph through our body, decreases.  Result is that toxins, unwanted substances remain unmoved from the body.  They stay in the body and cluster.  After a time they create blockages & ultimately illness.

Skin brush in the morning & then once again before bedtime to stimulate your lymphatic system.

Over time you should notice a difference in your body’s skin.  Cellulite may begin to disappear.  Your skin appears more vibrant, smoother.  You’re also removing dead skin cells allowing for new skin to appear providing a more youthful appearance to your skin.

Detox Foot Bath

If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, speak to your physician before giving yourself these baths.  You want to avoid over stimulating your heart.

In the evening, before bed and after skin brushing, try giving yourself a detox foot bath.

Again, if you’re feeling particularly unwell, be gentle with the amount of ingredients you use.  I recommend using 1 cup of Epsom salts for every 60 lbs of weight.  So if you are 120 lbs, use 2 cups.  However, if you’re very ill, or worn out, try only ½ cup or 1 cup of Epsom salts.

The weaker you are, the more toxins are likely in your body.  When they begin to circulate from doing skin brushing & these baths, you'll feel very ill and may give up before you've had benefit.

This is a formula I recommend:

Basin of hot water (no more than 98 degrees).

About 2 cups of Epsom salts (for a person 120 pounds).  If you feel very healthy and want to aggressively clean out your lymphatic system, double this amount.  So instead of 2 cups, try 3-4 cups of Epsom salts.

About 2 cups of hydrogen peroxide.  When wanting a thorough cleanse, add an additional 2 cups.  Try to use the therapeutic grade found in natural health stores.   Hydrogen peroxide stimulates oxygen in the blood providing you a greater sense of ‘aliveness’ & calming to your nervous system.

About 1 cup of baking soda.  As with hydrogen peroxide, natural health stores carry a grade that is without any additives that are not supportive of good health.

Baking soda in the foot bath relieves itching & skin irritation.  This is critical for you if you’ve been experiencing allergic reactions due to food intolerances or toxin buildup in the body.

As an addition, you can also add some raw, grated ginger, about a tablespoon.  It stimulates the body to increase blood flow.

Many detox foot baths also call for addition of essential oils.  As they are highly potent, you may wish to experiment first which ones trigger release of toxins and give you a greater sense of calm.  I’ll talk at length about essential oils at a later date.

Best time to give yourself a detox foot bath is before bed.

Give yourself a skin brush treatment, first, then soak in the foot bath for about 20 minutes.

The truth though is that by 20 minutes, the bath will no longer be hot.  I prefer to soak in the steaming bath for several minutes and then let my feet relax even further in the warm water for another 10-15 minutes.  I read a book, listen to music.  Sometimes, I sit at my laptop and blog while I soak my feet.  Whatever works for you.

You’ll find your body heating up during the foot bath.

For great health, you should be drinking upwards of 8 glasses of purified, non-chlorinated water everyday.  When you do a foot bath, add an additional 1 to 2 glasses of water daily, depending on your height and weight.  The taller you are, the heavier you, the more water you will need.

After the foot bath, do not rub your feet aggressively dry.  Instead pat them dry.  Your feet pores are open and are now actively releasing toxins.  Allow them to release so patting dry will least interfere with your pores.

At this point, you may also wish to stimulate your internal organs by pressing specific reflexology trigger points.  As with essential oils, I'll be discussing reflexology at length at a later date.

In the meantime, if you're eager to try reflexology, google the topic as there is an ocean of knowledge available online to get you started.

If you feel nauseous or headachy after your foot bath, place your feet in cool water.  This slows down the detoxification from your body.  I'd also suggest going to bed as you may not feel up to doing anything else.

Give yourself a foot bath every night or at least twice a week until your energy has increased, your focus has improved and your overall health is better.  Consider this a therapy to heal yourself of poor health.   A period of three to six weeks should clear up a number of health issues.

However, I also advise that you try giving yourself detox foot baths at least once or twice a week on an ongoing basis to maintain good health.

Skin brushing can be done everyday twice a day on an ongoing, non stop basis.

While your detoxing, eat fruits, vegetables, lots of purified water, organic chicken and fish.  Eat whole foods.
Supplement your diet with vitamin & minerals & good fats.  When you exercise, do so gently as your body needs it’s strength to detoxify.

Other than increasing your energy & focus, you will likely begin to see other ailments reduce or eliminate such as yeast infections, inflammation in joints, headaches, weary eyes.

During the heaviest part of the detoxification process, your tongue will likely have a thick white coat or even a coat with a yellowish tinge.  Scrape off this coat as it’s simply unwanted substances coming out of your body.

When you go for walks when you detoxify, you may find yourself sweating more than normal and your sweat may take on different odours.  Again, allow what’s been built up in your body to leave.

Detox foot baths & skin brushing is inexpensive, simple & quick to do & non invasive to your body.  Moreover, the benefits, as I've pointed out, are critical to your overall health & well being.

Scents

I drove along country roads today.  The fresh, clean air, the scent of the wildflowers did well for me.  Instead of feeling fatigued when I came home, I felt energized.

Pleasant scents trigger memories & enrich the body in a positive, healthful way.

If you're feeling poorly, clean your home & bring in pleasant, welcoming scents.

This will begin the process toward helping you feel well again.

Smoothies ( ...again) & Why They're So Good

This is "another" post about smoothies.  If you're interested in incorporating smoothies into your regular diet, I suggest you give this a read.  I cover all the reasons why drinking smoothies everyday is 'good' 4  you.

I originally posted it on one of my other blogs www.EcoChic4Women.blogspot.ca which I've suspended until September.  I won't have the time to give to it over the summer but it's an important blog 4 me.  It's 4 women and I talk about wellness lifestyle issues that matter to women.  Hope you join me at EcoChic4Women in September when I resume it again.

So that this post doesn't get lost in the mix, here it is again...  Enjoy!

Smoothies are a great way to lose weight & clean out the inside of your body.  Cleansing is a way to purge what you’ve built up over time inside your body.  Cleansing cleans out your liver & other organs permitting them to once again resume normal functioning.  Result is better health for you.  Much more energy.  You look healthier & younger too.

Smoothies are similar to juicing except you mix in the pulp with a smoothie.  Juicing you discard the pulp.  Both ways have medicinal benefits.  I'll be posting some of my favourite smoothie recipes shortly.

Here are some more tips about smoothies:

Customize recipes & portion sizes according to how much you need to drink in order to feel full.  The recipe portions should serve 2 people.  Add water to achieve your preferred consistency.  You may like your drink more liquidy, then add more water.  You may like it thicker which means less water.
If you want your smoothie to be cold, add some ice cubes but be sure your blender can handle the cubes.

Smoothies have fruit, vegetables & water.  All 3 are essential in a well balanced diet.  Smoothies taste great.  They’re mobile as you can drink them while on the go.  They’re inexpensive to make.  They’re filling & best of all, you’re eating what’s good for you.  The benefits will be obvious to you in just a few short weeks.

Combine smoothies with regular meals or have them as your main eating source.  The trick is you should never be starving or dizzy whatever you diet plan.  If you do, you are not taking in enough calories or you are not well and require a therapeutic diet plan.  I’ll be discussing therapeutic diet plans at another time.

While you can use many vegetables & fruits, these are our favourite recipes.  The greens & vegetables used are typically spinach, kale, celery & lettuce.  The fruits used most often are pears, apples & avocado.  The additional ingredients to add flavour & increase medicinal benefit are ginger, spirulina, lucuma, flaxseeds & hemp protein powder.

You’ll see by the recipes, they’re incredibly simple to make.  If a recipe calls for an ingredient you don’t like or are unfamiliar with, leave it out or change it for another.  If the taste is to your liking, go with it.  When I say replace the ingredient, I am, of course, saying replace with something healthy.

Smoothies are good for anyone at any age.  They’re great to drink before a workout or restore energy afterwards.  Smoothies alkaline your body.  Most often your body is overly acidic when it’s run down & when you’ve been eating poorly.  To balance out your system again, you’ll always want to eat foods that alkaline your body.

If you drink smoothies regularly, you’ll want to supplement them with a protein.  Some recipes have called for hemp protein powder.  Add this powder to other recipes if you need the added protein.  If you wish to change the protein powder to something other than hemp, your local health food store should have several other choices for you.

Best to make smoothies just minutes before you drink them.  However, if you don’t have the time, you can prepare in advance.  Just store in the fridge.  However, you should drink the smoothie within the day you’ve prepared it.

Remember smoothies are part of a cleansing of the body, a detox, a purge.  If you integrate smoothies into your everyday lifestyle, make sure you complement them with a balanced diet.

As part of detox, you may feel physical & emotional changes.  To stave off extreme detox changes like nausea, dizziness, slow down your detox.  Do so by adding solid foods to your daily eating intake.  If for example, you drink 2 smoothies each day combined with a solid food meal for dinner AND you feel hungry, dizzy, even nauseous, you’re over detoxing.  When I say over detoxing, I'm saying that your body is circulating into your bloodstream and flushing out unwanted substances like unnecessary fats, mucus, toxins.  Your body is circulating and disposing of these substances at too rapid a rate.  Cut down the amount of detoxing you’re doing by having only 1 smoothie a day until you can build up to having 2 a day.

If, however, you’ve tried slowly integrating detox into your eating regimen and no matter what, you’re still feeling weak, hungry, nauseous, stop the detox.  Your body is telling you that it needs attention in some way.  You may have an ailment that needs addressing.  See your doctor if nothing is working.

However, if you’re able to introduce having smoothies throughout your day and can for several days to a few weeks, you will enjoy many physical and emotional benefits.  They include clearer eyes, more radiant skin, stronger hair & nails, flatter stomach, decreased cellulite, improved digestion, weight loss, fewer cravings for junk food, increased energy, a more youthful body and face, healthier body tissue & cells, more nutrients feeding your body, more positive thoughts & greater sense of calm.

Smoothies give you increased energy because you are very deliberately introducing fresh greens into your body.  They are filled with chlorophyll allowing your body to clean it’s blood & organs more easily.  Greens also help tremendously in one’s digestion as they are filled with live enzymes, minerals & they enhance the production of hydrochloric acid in your stomach.  All of these are critical for good digestion.

How To Make Herbal Slimming Tea

Herbal slimming tea can be used by overweight people to reduce their weight when used in conjunction with exercise and a balanced diet. The herbs in the weight loss tea work together to rid the body of toxins and promote the excretion of fat cells. However, drinking the tea alone will not work. An effort must be made to cleanse the body, eat well, and exercise. Although slimming tea can help significantly, eating less calories and becoming more active is the only real way to lose weight and keep it off.

Things You'll Need

  • Dried birch leaves
  • Dried raspberry leaves
  • Dried blackthorn flowers
  • Dried goldenrod
  • Dried rose hips
  • Dried calendula flowers
  • Plastic freezer bag
  • Glass jar with lid
  • Labels and marker
  • Honey (optional)
